The City of Nedlands is a Local Government Area of Western Australia. It covers an area of approximately 20 square kilometers in metropolitan Perth, the capital of Western Australia and lies about 6.4km West of the Perth CBD. The City of Nedlands maintains 137.03 km of roads, a little over 380ha of parks and gardens and has a population of 21,000. Nedlands was originally known as Nedlands Park. Nedlands is a mixed-character suburb - it contains low-cost housing for students at the neighbouring University of Western Australia; wealthy homes and a golf course in the southern half of the suburb; a commercial area, restaurants and a small cinema along both sides of Stirling Highway; the Lions Eye Institute, a major centre of research into eye disease, and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, one of Perth's major public hospitals, and Hollywood Private Hospital and neighbouring aged care facilities. The hospital and Stirling Highway are well served by the CircleRoute and other bus routes.
